Disability Royal Commission

The Disability Royal Commission was established in April 2019 in response to community concern about widespread reports of violence against and the neglect, abuse and exploitation of people with disability.

These incidents might have happened recently or a long time ago. The Disability Royal Commission will investigate:

• Preventing and better protecting people with disability from experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation

• Achieving best practice in reporting, investigating and responding to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability

• Promoting a more inclusive society that supports people with disability to be independent and live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation

The DRC wants to hear from

• People with disability

• Their families

• Carers

• Wider community 

​who have concerns or experienced violence against, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with a disability. 

Sussex Street Community Law Service has received funding from the Department of Social Services to provide advocacy services to:

• ​People with disability

• Their families

• Carers

• Wider community 

​who need assistance because they have difficulty in communicating or understanding how to engage with the Disability Royal Commission.

This is a free service and independent of the Disability Royal Commission.

These services are provided in Perth, Mid-West, Goldfields, Esperance and Great Southern. 

The Sussex Street Community Law Service Disability Royal Commission advocate will:

​

• Explain the Disability Royal Commission process

• Explain how to tell their story to the Disability Royal Commission

• Work out problems or avoid discriminatory issues

• Find communication supports such as interpreters

• Access free legal advice and counselling services

• Assist or refer you to other services which can help
