8. KEEPING YOUR CAR SAFE

Checklist for Safe Car Items

Spare Wheel - with tyre in good condition

Jack - to fit your car

Wheel Spanner

Torch - or lead light that connects to your car's cigarette lighter or battery

First Aid Kit

Road Warning Reflectors

Safety depends not only on your car being in good condition but also on keeping basic safe car items readily available in your car.

A spare tyre and jack in proper working order mean less time to change a tyre; road warning reflectors means less chance of another car crashing into yours while you change the tyre.

If you regularly travel in the country of for long periods, it is worth equipping your car with additional safety items. For example, safety flares (available from camping shops) can attract attention on isolated roads; a CB radio can be used for quick calls for assistance and a small fire extinguisher may prevent a major fire.
