In Western Australia a person legally becomes an adult on his or her eighteenth birthday. Before then, legal rights are restricted, and the person's parents or legal guardians take responsibility for many things that affect a child's life.
However, even before they turn 18, as a young person gets older, he or she can take more legal responsibility; and some parental rights diminish in stages.
This chapter focuses on the rights of young people in respect of parental relationships, education, care and protection and the criminal justice system. A new section on adoption has also been included in this chapter.
